Could your business handle a supplier disruption?

Supplier resilience is a business continuity question, not simply a purchasing exercise.

Know where dependence becomes exposure

A reliable supplier can still become a point of concentration. Owners should understand which relationships the business cannot easily replace and what a disruption would mean for customers. The lowest quoted cost does not describe the full commercial consequence of a missed delivery.

Alternatives involve tradeoffs

Additional supply options, more inventory or different delivery arrangements can each bring costs and operating demands. There is no universal balance that suits every business. A resilience discussion should consider what the operation needs to protect and what it can realistically support.

Treat this as a management decision

Purchasing, operations and finance can see the same supplier issue differently. Advisory can help bring those perspectives together and identify where further assessment is needed. The objective is a practical view of continuity, rather than a long list of suppliers or a promise that disruption can be eliminated.

Resilience has a carrying cost

Extra inventory, another supplier or a different shipping arrangement can reduce one risk while adding cost elsewhere. Holding more stock ties up cash. A backup supplier may need time to qualify and may not be available at the original price when demand spikes.

The business question is which disruption would matter most to your customers and how much flexibility you need to respond. A hypothetical distributor reliant on one item for a major customer may prioritize that dependency rather than holding extra stock across every category. The objective is a deliberate tradeoff between continuity, cost and working capital.
