Too many AML alerts? What fintech founders should ask

A growing alert backlog can affect capacity, customer experience and control quality. Understand the business questions before choosing a solution.

A backlog is a symptom

More alerts do not automatically mean your startup needs another tool or a larger team. The underlying issue could involve product changes, information quality, unclear responsibilities or review capacity. Founders need a clear explanation of the problem before approving an investment or accepting a change in risk.

Speed alone is not the goal

A smaller queue can look like progress while important issues remain unresolved. Leadership needs to understand whether decisions are reliable and whether the team can handle unusual activity responsibly. Changing monitoring settings merely to reduce workload can create new problems; technical decisions belong in an appropriately scoped review.

Connect the decision to growth

A process that works at an early stage may become strained as volumes or products change. The founder’s role is to understand the constraint and decide what resources and oversight are needed.

Locate the delay before choosing the remedy

A queue can grow because work is waiting to be assigned, because reviewers are missing information, or because decisions require repeated escalation. Hiring more analysts may help the first problem while leaving the other two untouched. Leadership needs a clear account of where time is being spent before approving a solution.

For example, a hypothetical fintech launches a new product and sees more unresolved cases. The issue may be unfamiliar customer behavior, incomplete data or unclear decision ownership. A change in workload is a reason to investigate what changed, not proof that a particular setting should be loosened.

Review speed should sit beside measures of quality and rework. If cases close faster but repeatedly reopen or cannot be explained, the apparent improvement may not be durable. Monitoring changes need appropriate specialist review and testing for the actual business; a lower alert count alone is not evidence that the program is working better.
